Athanasios (Thanasis) G. Kanatas is a Professor at the Department of Digital Systems at the University of Piraeus, Greece, https://www.ds.unipi.gr/en/faculty/kanatas-en/) and the Director of the Telecommunication Systems Laboratory. He received the Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece, in 1991, the M.Sc. degree in Satellite Communication Engineering from the University of Surrey, Surrey, UK in 1992, and the Ph.D. degree in Mobile Satellite Communications from NTUA, Greece in February 1997. In 1996, he joined the Mobile Radio-Communications Laboratory as a research associate. From 1999 to 2002 he was with the Institute of Communication & Computer Systems responsible for the technical management of various research projects. In 2000, he became a member of the Board of Directors of OTESAT S.A. In 2002, he joined the University of Piraeus as an Assistant Professor. He has published more than 200 papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He is the author of 6 books in the field of wireless and satellite communications in Greek and/or English language. He has been the technical manager of several European and National R&D projects. His current research interests include mmWave communications in 6G systems, the development of new waveforms and digital techniques for next generation wireless and satellite communications systems; joint communication and sensing techniques, wireless channel characterization, simulation, and modeling for land, aerial and satellite communication systems; antenna design and array beamforming techniques; wireless networks performance analysis using stochastic geometry tools; and UAV-assisted wireless communications.

He has been a Senior Member of IEEE since 2002. In 1999, he was elected Chairperson of the Communications Society of the Greek Section of IEEE. From 2013 to 2017, he has served as Dean of the School of Information & Communication Technologies of the University of Piraeus, Greece. In 2021 he elected delegate of Region 15 (Greece, Cyprus, Israel, Turkey) in European Association on Antennas and Propagation (EurAAP). He is an Editor of IEEE Trans. on Wireless Communications, Editor of IEEE Communications Letters, and Associate Editor of IEEE Trans. on Antennas & Propagation.

George P. Efthymoglou

George P. Efthymoglou received the B.S. degree in physics from University of Athens, in 1991 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Florida Atlantic University, USA, in 1993 and 1997, respectively. From 1993 to 1997 he worked as a telecommunications consultant and gave lectures on the theory and simulation of digital communication systems to employees of companies such as Motorola, Lucent, Harris Corporation, AT&T, and IBM. In 1998, he joined the R&D group of Signal Processing Worksystem (SPW) at Cadence Design Systems, where he worked in projects related to modeling, simulation, and performance evaluation of 3G wireless systems. In 2002, he joined the Department of Digital Systems at the University of Piraeus where he is currently a Professor. His research interests are in the area of digital communications with emphasis on the performance of cellular and satellite communication systems.

Demosthenes Vouyioukas

Demosthenes Vouyioukas is Associate Professor at the Department of Digital Systems, University of Piraeus. He served as Professor at the Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering, University of the Aegean, Greece (2011-2024), Head of the Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering (2019-2022), Director of the MSc program “IoT: Intelligent Environments in Next-Generation Networks” (2018-2022) and Director of the Computer and Communication Systems Laboratory (2014-2024). In November 2021 he appointed as deputy member of the plenary of the Hellenic Data Protection Authority, where in the past he has also served as a deputy member of the plenary of the Hellenic Authority for Communication Security and Privacy (2012-2019).

He received the five-year Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering (1996) and the Ph.D. degree (2003) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He also received a Joint Engineering-Economics M.Sc. from NTUA (2004). From 1996 to 2003, he has been a scientific researcher, and from 2003 to 2005, a senior researcher at the Mobile Radiocommunications Laboratory of NTUA, where he worked on several European and National R&D projects. From 2005 to 2006, he was with Hellenic Aerospace Industry at the Department of Satellite Communications. In 2004, he joined University of the Aegean as an adjunct lecturer (2004-2010), an Assistant Professor (2010-2016), an Associate Professor (2016-2020) and Professor (2020-2024), where he also served as a scientific coordinator in several R&D projects.

His current research interests include mobile and wireless communication systems, channel characterization and propagation models, machine learning techniques for pathloss prediction, performance modeling of wireless networks, cooperative wideband systems with relays, UWB indoor localization techniques, UAV and aerial communications, next generation mobile and satellite networks, mMIMO, IoT and 5G and beyond/6G technologies, network security and privacy policies. He has published over 140 papers in scientific journals, books, book chapters and international conference proceedings. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and member of IEEE Communication Society of the Greek Section, a member of IFIP and ACM and a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece. He also serves as an Associate Editor of Telecommunication Systems Journal/Springer, Frontiers in Space Technologies/Frontier and Telecom/MDPI, Guest Editor of International Journal of Antennas and Propagation/Hindawi, Drones/MDPI, Applied Sciences/MDPI and Telecom/MDPI and TPC member in several international conferences. He is a General Chair and Organizer of the International Summer School “Emerging Architectures and Key Technologies for 5G Networks”.
